In Montgomery, Alabama, this morning. It's hot an humid.
Should be on the beach this afternoon!
More to follow.

Sue Albee
Received the following from Betty Conboy
Dear Friends,
I have just spoken to Chris Albee ( Sue's youngest son). The news is very sad. Sue is with Hospice and Chris doubts that she will make it a week. He was there a week ago and she was interactive and responsive and he arrived yesterday to find her unresponsive and in and out of awareness. She is being responding comfortably to medications. Sue's oldest Son is there and the other Son arrives today.Sue was diagnosed in March with lung and then brain cancer. I am so very sad. Please Pray for Sue and her family.
Chris will call me when the end comes and I will let you know.
Love to all,
Betty

David Smith's Mai Tai Mix
In anticipation of this evenings Luau I am prompted to share the greatest recipe for Mai Tai.Classmates have probably tired one of the many, such as those served at King Kamehameha Hotel in Kailua-Kona; The Rusty Harpoon in Kaanapali, Maui; Pat's at Punaluu; Trader Vic's; or the Chart House. However during my tours in Hawaii I found the following to be my favorite"
1 3/4 oz Light Rum
3/4 oz Dark Rum
3/4 oz Curacao
1/4 oz Grenadine
1/4 oz Orgeat
1/4 oz Lime Juice
1 1/2 oz Lemon Juice
1 1/2 oz Orange Juice
1 1/2 oz Unsweetened Pineapple Juice
1/4 Teaspoon Superfine Sugar
Enjoy

Fifty Four's Fifty Fourth
The Reunion is underway and so far it has been FANTASTIC!
According to Bill Land we have 398 classmates and ladies here by the Severn. Last night we kicked off the celebration with a Luau. There were mumus and Hawaiian music, roast pig and those little drinks with umbrellas in them, - and we all had a great time.
This morning we held a Memorial Service in the Chapel. We read the list of those we have lost since our 50th reunion and ended the service with Eternal Father and Navy Blue and Gold ( the old words). It was an impressive ceremony.
The memorial service was followed by lunch and free time to visit the Midshipman's Store.
Tonight we have a dinner dance at the Stadium.
I'll try to keep you updated as we roll along.

Reunion Pictures
I'm going to try to post pictures from the reunion daily. Hopefully we have a photographer somewhere in the class with a digital camera who can supply some talent to the effort. I will post the photos at:

Check the 54th for 54 Album. Right now I have some old midshipman photos which bring back some memories - and maybe some laughs.

Death of a Class Mate - Captain Ralph A Turner USN Ret 22
Bill Land received the following email:
Dear Mr. Land,
I am writing for my father, Ralph A. Turner, Jr. He was a member of the class of 1954, and he was interested in this weekend's reunion of the class of 1954. I am very sorry to tell you that my father died suddenly on Sunday, June 1, while on vacation with three of his children in Estes Park, Colorado. In fact, my father had been at our rental house for just three hours when he began experiencing shortness of breath. He died in just a few minutes in spite of our attempts at CPR and rescue breathing; the paramedics and doctors also tried to revive him for fifty minutes. Needless to say, this loss is devastating for us; our mom, June Turner, died just two years ago, and all of us are still learning to live without her, and now we have lost our father. The Naval Academy was very important to him as were the life-long friendships that he made there and in the Navy. I hope you will receive this email in time to tell his friends about his death and to remind him of how much he valued the Navy and his colleagues. May I ask you for an email confirmation of this message?
Most sincerely,Elizabeth Turner

Our Poet Looks At TRADITION!
WHEN PLEBES REALLY GET THE SHAFT
When the Old Gray Spike is smeared with lard,
And the plebes rush out en masse to the Yard,
One imagines that Captain Herndon grins
To see how the plebelings bark their shins.
So they clutch in a slippery pyramid
While the smallest and lightest tries not to skid
From scaling his classmates' sweating backs,
As new graduates watch, and just relax.
But at last the white cap's clapped on high,
Chants of "No Mo' Plebes" float to the sky,
In one more step to a life's ambition.
And why?
Great God, man, it's TRADITION!
