A REMINDER FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY
While we enjoy cookouts and fireworks
Brave sailors are manning their stations--
Bold soldiers are scouting brown hillsides
That we may pursue celebrations.
Keen airmen fly fighters or transports,
Their radar-scans steady, unblinking,
While Coast Guards respond to a MAYDAY
Of yachtsmen in danger of sinking.
Ah yes--let us feast on fried chicken,
Let crowds ooh! and aah! at the brilliance--
But ever, forever remember
Who pays for our peace as civilians.
