NAVY FOOTBALL  N0. 3                                  Observations from an Olde Poolie

Sept. 18, 2011. South Carolina 24 Navy 21.  On an overcast evening with fall like temps
in the low sixties, before over 78,000 noisy Gamecock fans, Navy's football team gave it
their best and almost upset the No. 10 team in the country. Navy was a 17 point
underdog but did not play that way. A couple of plays - better execution or better  defense -
and the Midshipmen would have pulled it off. " We didn't come here for moral victories,
we came here to win," Niumatalolo said. " I felt we were well-prepared. There was no
doubt in my mind we were ready. I'm proud of our young men. I thought they played hard.
Unfortunately, it wasn't good venough."  Give credit to SC and a tremendous 230 pound
elusive back, Marcus Larrimore, who gained 246 yards on 37 carries.

After an exchange of punts, Navy started on their 35 and drove 65 yards in 5 plays in
1:40 minutes. SB Howell scored on a 27 yard run helped by excellent blocking.
Navy 7 SC 0 midway through the first quarter. The Gamecocks game back with a
71 yard drive to tie the game 7 - 7 with 4:47 left in the quarter.  The Midshipmen then
used six minutes while traveling 77 yards in 12 plays. Proctor scored von a 5 yard run.
Navy  14 SC 7 early in the second quarter. SC answered with an 80 yard drive,
including  a 30 yard pass completion on third and 15. Larrimore scored on a 5 ysard run.
Navy 14 SC 14 with eight minutes left. Navy moved down to the SC 37 but on fourth and
two failed to convert. With 3:34 left SC moved to Navy territory then kicked a 48 yard
field goal as the half ended. SC 17 Navy 14.

SC started the second half by driving to the Navy 21, then under pressure the QB
was intercepted at the one by Navy's Mitchell who ran it ut to the nine. Navy then
drove 91 yards using over 6 minutes in 11 plays. Teich scored on a 2 yard run.
Navy 21 SC 17. The Gamecocks then drove 80 yards using 16 plays and
six minutes to take the lead 24 - 21 with 12:45 remaining. Later,  Navy's defense
stopped SC on fourth and two at the 10. The MIds moved to the SC 30 but on
fourth and 7 Proctor was intercepted with 54 seconds left. SC ran out the clock.

A hard fought game. The Gamecocks escaped.

Navy was without  three linebackers who should be back for Air Force.

Navy's Sprint team beat ARMY 38 - 20 in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Navy has next week off then hosts Air Force at 12 noon on October 1.

Air Force did not play Sat.  Army hung on to beat Northwestern at West Point
21- 14.
