NAVY FOOTBALL 2012 No. 1 Observations from an Olde Poolie
September 1, 2012. Notre Dame 50 Navy 10. On a pleasant day (64 degrees) in Dublin Ireland before a capacity crowd of 49,000 including about 1000 Midshipmen who paid their own way, Navy's football team got hammered by a very good Notre Dame team. Four turn-overs at key times did not help.
Notre Dame took the opening kick-off and marched down the field to take an early 6 point lead. Navy failed to convert on a fourth and one at the Irish 30. Four plays later ND led 13 – 0 on a 56 yard run. Notre Dame kept Navy bottled up and scored two TDs in the second quarter to lead 27 – 0. The Midshipmen drove 70 yards to the Irish 15 and freshman Sloan kicked a 26 yard field goal as the clock expired in the half. Notre Dame 27 Navy 3.
The Midshipmen started the second half by QB Miller completing three straight passes and scored on a 24 yard grab by WR Lynch. ND 27 Navy 10. Navy turn-overs and a strong rushing game by Notre Dame behind a 305 pound experienced line doomed the Midshipmen. Both teams used back-ups in the fourth period.
Notre Dame had 293 yards rushing to Navy's 149 (ouch). The Irish completed 16 – 23 passes for 197 yards. Trey Miller was 14 -19 for 192 yards.
Too many mistakes by Navy. A new offensive line still needs to come together. Lot's of work for the coachs. Tough opener.
The Midshipmen have two weeks to prepare for Penn State who lost their opener to Ohio University 14 – 24. Penn State plays at Virginia next week.
Army was idle. Air Force beat Idaho State 49 – 21.
