NAVY FOOTBALL No. 10. Observations from an Olde poolie
November 10, 2012. Troy 41 Navy 31. On a beautiful day in southern Alabama before over 24,000 Troy Trojan fans, Navy fell behind early 0 - 21 early in the second quarter, could not stop Troy's offense, made two turn-overs at critical times, and got beat by a determined and well-coached team. Navy only gained 40 yards in the first quarter. The Trojans compiled 415 yards passing and 182 rushing. Navy got their offense going in the second quarter but could never get the lead. "I'll take the hit for this. … They were more prepared than we were and got off to a better start than we did …They played better than we did and coached better than we did". Coach Niumatalolo.
Navy received the opening kick-off, made one first down – then punted. Troy got a good punt return then used four plays to score on a 34 yard pass. Troy 7 Navy 0. Navy got to mid-field. Reynolds was sacked on third and long and the Midshipmen punted to Troy's 15. An 85 yard drive in 14 plays and over 6 minutes. Troy 14 Navy 0. Early in the second quarter, QB Reynolds went off the left side for a 70 yard run but fumbled at the Troy three when a big tackle threw him down like a rag-doll. The ball was recovered in the end zone by Troy. A 62 yard TD pass gave Troy a 21 – 0 lead early in the second quarter. Navy's offense finally began to click and scored on a 74 yard drive. Green had 40 yards in the drive. Troy 21 Navy 7. With ten minutes left in the half. Troy moved to Navy's 18 but DB Wave Ryder intercepted for Navy and ran it to the 25. A 68 yard pass to WR Lynch set up a 5 yard run for Reynolds. Troy 21 Navy 14. Troy then scored on a 44 yard pass. Troy 28 Navy 14. Troy tried an on-side kick but a player touched it before it went ten yards. Navy took advantage of excellent position going 39 yards in 8 plays to close to 21 – 28 with 24 seconds left.
Early in the second half Troy punted to the Navy one. Three plays and punt. Troy kicked a 25 yard field goal. Troy 31 Navy 21. On second down Gee Gee Green took a pitch out and raced 59 yards for a TD. Troy 31 Navy 28 with over six minutes left in the quarter. Later Troy drove to Navy's one but LB Wetzel's tackle caused a fumble and Navy recovered at the one. Navy moved to midfield, but Reynolds was sacked and fumbled, Troy recovered at Navy's 47. Three plays plus a 15 yard penalty and Troy stretched the lead to 38 - 28. With seven minutes remaining the Midshipmen drove to the Troy 20 yard line where Sloan kicked a 27 yard field goal. Troy 38 Navy 31. After a 69 yard drive Troy kicked a 23 yard FG with three minutes left. Troy 41 Navy 31.
Navy gained 328 yards rushing. Green had his best day with 150 yards in 216 carries. Reynolds had 130 yards. Reynolds was 8-15-0 for 159 yards passing. Troy was 34-40-1 for 415 yards passing.
Army (2-8) lost to No. 24 Rutgers 28 –7 . San Diego State University beat Air Force (5-5) 28 – 9.
Next for Navy. Texas State, coached by Dennis Franchione (Coached at Alabama and Texas A & M), lost in a shoot-out to No. 19 Louisiana Tech 62 – 55. They are only 3-6 but put up lots of points. Navy's defense will be in for a challenge.
