Virginia Beach - Captain William J. Hunter, USN Retired, age 82, passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side, on April 14, 2013. Born November 14, 1930 in Washington, D.C., Bill Hunter was graduated from St. Pauls' School for Boys in Baltimore, Maryland; the United States Naval Academy; the George Washington University; the Naval War College; and the National War College. He was a member of the Naval Academy class of 1954 who marched in the inaugural parade of Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953. He played on the undefeated 1954 National Champion team and was on the All-American Lacrosse teams of 1953, and 1954 (first team). Throughout his 30 year Naval Career, Captain Hunter was primarily on Destroyers. In 1969 he led the summer Plebe program at Annapolis under Superintendent James Calvert that ended hazing. He was also editor of the Naval Institute's student anthology Challenge. In 1973 he was commissioning skipper of USS Marvin Glenn Shields (DE 1066) named for the first Medal of Honor winner in the Vietnam War. In 1977 he was Commodore of a Destroyer Squadron 24 and in 1981 was Chief Of Staff Battleforce 6th Fleet. His shore assignments were primarily in tactics, ship improvements, as well as command and control projects. Bill's second career began in 1983 and took him through 2013, working as a Defense Department Consultant.
He leaves his wife, Lisa, of Virginia Beach; his son, Bill Jr., of Ponte Vedra, Fla.; his daughter, Meredith of Gastonia, N.C.; his grandson, Elijah; his granddaughters, Emily and Alice Noren; his great-granddaughter, Charlotte Grace; his step children; Adrian Taylor, Noah Taylor, Lt. Commander Seth Taylor, and Rachael Taylor Malbon; and step grandchildren, Sarah and Rafaella Taylor, Barrett Taylor, Cameron Hankin, and Anthony and Ashlynn Taylor.
Bill is best known for a great sense of humor that he has passed on to all who were blessed to have known him. His dedication to his family was unparalleled and he has set the bar high for future generations. He was loved and will be missed by family and friends alike. May he rest in peace.
There will be a burial at sea to honor this great man. Family and friends will gather at the home of Joe and Harriet Collector in Norfolk, Va. on Sunday, April 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. to celebrate his life. I was not aware that Bill had died. He was a year ahead of me at St Paul's which I left after 7th grade. We next met at the Pentagon where he wound up in my department where I was Director, Telecommunications and Command & Control Systems. Being acquainted so many years before our work together at the pentagon, Bill and I enjoyed a renewed friendship. He joined our amazing trip through the Pacific at the behest of Admiral Noel Geyler, CINCPAC, in which we visited Hawaii, Guam, Manila, the island base at Diego Garcia, and the DMZ in Korea. Bill had a great career in the Navy, and I was privileged that we were able to work together in 1976, 1977. Dick Shriver
