Leighton “Dale” Smith, Captain, U.S. Navy, Ret. passed away Sunday, August 11, 2013 in Gainesville, Fl at the age of 82. He graduated from the US Naval Academy. He also graduated from and taught at the US Naval War College. He earned a Masters in International Affairs from George Washington University.
He retired after 26 yrs. in the Navy including CO of the NROTC at UF. He later retired as Director of Facility Operations for IFAS at UF after 10 yrs. with the state of Florida. He was active in the United Methodist Church his whole life; singing in the church choir, serving on the board and as Board Chairman, and contracting building projects to name a few contributions.
He leaves his wife, Rose Smith of Ft. White, Fl, daughters, Debbie Gramling of Ft. White, Fl and Lisa Hayes of Lamont, Fl, son Steve Smith (Molly Cobb-Smith) of High Springs, Fl, grandsons, Richard Gramling, Sean Smith (USN) and Cody Smith (mother Brenda Macrides).
Internment with full military honors was held privately at Florida National Cemetery. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 11:00 am at Fort White United Methodist Church followed by a reception in the church hall.
