Major Julian Salas, USAF (Ret.), ended his valiant battle with pancreatic cancer on October 15, 2013. He died peacefully at his home in Salt Lake City, UT, surrounded by his loving wife and family.
He was born January 9, 1931, in Chandler, CO, the youngest child of Jose and Dolores (Perez) Salas.
Julian graduated from Carbon High School, Price, UT, in 1949. Upon graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1954, he took his commission in the US Air Force
In April 1955, Julian married Teresa Maria Montoya of Royal, UT.
Fluent in Spanish and English, Julian spent his youth in Florence, CO, and Standardville, UT, where he excelled in math and learned to love tennis. While at the Naval Academy, Julian was privileged to march at the inauguration of President Dwight Eisenhower.
Julian's service in the Air Force included seven years in nuclear intelligence; OIC of the Utah Launch Complex in Green River, UT; and Commander of the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station, Bangor, ME.
While working toward a master's degree in nuclear physics at Oklahoma State University, Julian wandered into the business library and began studying the stock market, which captured and held his attention ever after. Upon retiring from the USAF in 1973, Julian moved his family to Salt Lake City and became the first Hispanic in Utah to be licensed as a stockbroker by the New York Stock Exchange. In the 1980s, he developed and copyrighted his theory "The Anatomy of a Stock Split," which the Salt Lake Tribune described as significantly improving the success of sophisticated investors buying call options associated with stock split candidates.
Julian also enjoyed a third "career" playing Blackjack for the most part in Wendover, NV.
Julian was active in public service. He served for two years as president of SOCIO's Utah chapter, helping Hispanics pursue higher education and wider career opportunities. Later, he served as a Blue and Gold officer for the Naval Academy.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Maria; daughters: Linda (Byron Noordewier), Delores, Katherine (Thomas Carstens), Ann, Michele (Patrick Quinn), Karen (David Wheeler), and Helen (Scott McCarty); sister, Ramona; brother, Alfonso; 17 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Julian was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nicandra; and brothers, Anacleto, Eulogio (Joe), and Victor.
A viewing will be held October 20, 2013, at 6:30 pm, with a rosary at 7:30 pm, at St. Vincent de Paul church in Salt Lake City. On October 21, funeral mass will be at 10 am at the church followed by a luncheon at 11 am, and burial services at the Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Parkin Bluffdale at 2 pm.
