On Saturday, January 10 we drove to Coronado to Ed Martin's funeral at Christ Church. We arrived about 15 minutes before scheduled start time and the place was packed and parking in the neighborhood was scarce. Apparently Ed, in later life, was the same quiet, retiring type we knew. He belonged to various groups and it seemed that every member of each group attended. Additionally, a number of officers from a nearby fighter squadron, I believe 17 officers volunteered, were there as ushers.
The church office manager estimated about 600 people were in attendance. I don't know if any other classmates were there. We saw the service on closed circuit TV in the church hall adjacent to the sanctuary. It was a beautiful service straight from the Episcopal Prayer book.
After the service Ed's widow, Sherry sat on a stool in the shade of a large tree and greeted attendees. The entire service and reception following were very well done.
