Harold Nagel, PhD, 83, resident of South Hamilton, Mass., passed away suddenly on August 18, 2015. Dr. Nagel hailed from Fort Wayne, Ind., the son of Harold S. Nagel and Anna Eleanor (Cate) Nagel. He was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1954, and he served his country for 11 years, including work providing logistical and meteorological services during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After the conclusion of his military service, he went on to obtain a doctorate in Oceanography at Texas A & M. Dr. Nagel taught at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., before working for EBASCO Services, out of New York City, where he lent his environmental engineering expertise to nuclear power projects. He went on to work as a technical editor for the American Meteorological Society in Boston, until his retirement in 2012. Harold was a devoted family man and an experienced yachtsman, a former member of the Niantic Bay Yacht Club. An avid dog-lover, he also adopted greyhounds, rescuing four retired racing dogs over the years and providing a home for them in the town of South Hamilton. Harold is survived by his wife, Laura (Bueno) Nagel; his three children, Michael Nagel and his wife Shelly Orenstein, Jennifer Nagel-Vazquez, and H. Nicholas Nagel; and his five grandchildren, J. Alexander Vazquez, Justin Vazquez, Leah Nagel, Marc Nagel, and Luke Nagel. His funeral service will be held in the Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home 167 Maple Street (route 62), Danvers, Sunday, August 23, at 10 a.m. Relatives, friends, and anyone who wishes to express their condolences, are invited.
